I've just had a minor accident,there were no witnesses but a van just pulled out of a parking space on the side of the road and hit me as I was driving up the road,I was going real slow as I was looking for a space to park myself,in fact I was driving right in the middle of the road as there was a massive lorry parked before the van and he took up so much of the road,you had no choice but to drive over the middle white line (just to point out there were no cars in the other lane).My car is fine but his van has smashed,mirror,lights,dents etc...He went mad saying it's his brand new works van and his boss will go mad and make him pay for the damage and he was stationary but I know he wasn't and there are no witnesses,the only vehicle around was the lorry and the driver was in the shop.How do I stand with this as I've never had anything like this happen before,also I did agree to swap insurance details and gave him mine first as soon as he had mine,he jumped in his van and sped off,luckily the company he works for was written on the van,as it's evening now I can't get hold of anyone but will telephone tomorrow morning to get his/their insurance details.

Why does California suck so much?!?!?

UGH! I'm a teenager, who drives a 2001 Honda Accord, right? I've been driving for almost two years (this November) and I had my insurance set up that I pay it every 6 months and it would accumulate to $720.90. I've always paid my insurance a week or two ahead of time and my driving record is perfect thus far. But then, I get my insurance this time and now it's $777.90 dollars!!! It increased $57 out of nowhere. I called and it's because of North Carolina doing a business deal with California and California increased everything or something. I know that sounds sketchy. I have Progressive, by the way. And no, they don't offer any student discounts (I got straight A's when I was in high school and now I'm in college and I still get them) but they don't acknowledge that because California or whatever took the rights away to lend out such discounts. My question is: why does California suck so much? It isn't fair whatsoever... $1600 (almost) a year for insurance on a 2001 Honda Acoord is ridiculous. Is there any cheaper insurances out there besides Progressive?

Car Insurance Question?

Hey all. Recently, a car ran into my legally parked car early in the morning. When I found my car hit, strangely, the other car was still there with their lights on and keys in the ignition. It appeared whomever was driving fled. Fortunately, when the police was called, one of the officers found insurance information for the car that hit mine. We took the make, model, year, and licence plate numbers down on the report. The officers left, however I'm not sure if they are going to attempt to search out the registered owner or not. Guess I could call to see if they are or not. Anyway, I then had the other car towed away and mine towed to a nearby auto body shop. They gave me a preliminary estimate for repairs. I then used the car insurance that was found in the other car, called and filed a claim. The same day the insurance I called had an insurance adjuster/appraiser come look at my car. They considered the damages to notably exceed the first estimate, and considered it 'totaled'. Now, the other car's insurance is attempting to contact the registered owner. They mentioned that if there is difficulty in reaching the owner, the insurance to blame may deny making a reimbursement/compensation payment for my damages. Should I contact the police to see if they've investigated the person? I then later called my own insurance and notified them of what happened in its entirety. Now...if my claim is denied by the at fault person and their insurance, is their any consolation for me? Shall I hire a lawyer and sue in small claims or civil court (for damages/rental car/lawyer fees) since the damages estimated are borderline ~$5,000 +/- 1,000? Could this be a successful alternative if their insurance refuses to help me out? Or should I bite the bullet and go through my own insurance...risking an increased premium for something that was not my fault? Thank you for any advice.

Today I bumped a parked car when trying to pull out of a paralell parking spot. Both cars were scratched, but no dents. My car was in worse shape than hers, and I took mine to an auto body shop to get a quote on what it would cost to repair the scratch. The quote I got was $671.23. The lady (who was sitting in her car when I bumped her) said she was going to have to have the whole bumper replaced... even though it was just a scratch about 3 inches long. We called the insurance companies and I admitted fault (duh.) She said she was going to call the police and may have to go to the doctor because her neck hurt, but the police were never called. I am still worried she is going to try to sue me or get more money from me... it was just a small scratch! Not even a DENT! My main question, will my car insurance rates go up, and if so, by how much? I drive a 2010 Kia Soul. I have one other accident on my record and I pay about $150 a month. If it does go up, is it going to be drastic? Her car was a 2012 Kia Soul (same color oddly enough) so I am hoping her quote will be similar? Don't give me because it costs too much and they cant afford it. I think it's the price of having a car. You wouldn't get a car and say well tires are expensive, I can't afford them you just need them. The point of insurance is to be able to afford to fix any damages you may cause to another driver's car or person. If I wrecked someone's car I would certainly want the other person to be able to get their car fixed or replaced. i was driving down the freeway yesterday and a rock hit my windshield. it now has two huge cracks. and i have to get it replaced i know it cant be repaired. my deductible on my insurance is $500, should i report it to the insurance or not? would it be cheaper to just fix it myself?

Proof of insurance California?

I recently had my car fixed and for some stupid reason I pulled all my documentation out of the car. Well, I got pulled over one day and was cited for not having my proof of insurance. (Stupid, I know.) The cop was really nice and said I just needed to go down to the court and show them that I was covered during the period I was pulled over. He said the fine would be at most 10 bucks. Today I get my notice of bail and it says that if I show proof of insurance, I can get the bail reduced to 756 dollars! Am I reading this right? Thanks

Registering a car in California?

I just bought a car in California. I just moved here and am still looking for a place to live. It was a private sale, but they left me the plates, they said it goes with the car. She also told me I have 10 days to report to the DMV. Is this true? I haven't yet because I still have no place to live. If I opened a PO Box, would that be sufficient to register my car to, and even a drivers license? Or do I need a street address? What should I do? Also, can I insure it with just a PO box? I hope to have a place within the next week, but I'm still waiting on all of this right now.

Since the affordable health act will most likely go through, could I get a subsidized insurance when I retire at 60? I will have about 2 million dollars in mostly non-taxed retirement accounts, and some in taxed accounts. If I only have say $35,000 in taxable income when I retire, am I still eligible for the subsidized health insurance as it's determined by taxable income I believe and not how much a person have in retirement accounts?
